Kaenga Hou creates pathways to home ownership for whānau, hapū, and communities across Aotearoa where conventional finance can't reach.

Our Kaupapa

Kia tupu, kia puāwai te mana motuhake o ngā whānau.

Kaenga Hou Trust is a kaupapa Māori charitable trust. We walk alongside whānau, hapū, iwi, and community groups to create pathways to home ownership on Māori land across Te Tairāwhiti, Te Tai Tokerau, and Hawke's Bay.

We do what conventional finance cannot.

We bring together financial capability support, access to lending, and wraparound navigation, so whānau can move from aspiration to ownership on their own terms and on their own whenua.

Every year, whānau Māori are told by banks, ‘we cannot lend on that land’. They have the whenua. They have the aspiration. What they don't have is a finance system designed for Māori land structures.

Kaenga Hou exists to change that.

Our home ownership pathways include Shared Ownership, Rent to Buy arrangements, and Licence to Occupy on whenua Māori.

Shared Ownership

Shared Ownership is our primary pathway to home ownership. It is designed for whānau, hapū, and community groups where a standard mortgage is not available.

Licence to Occupy

A Licence to Occupy (LTO) is a pathway for whānau who want to build or live on ancestral or Māori freehold land. This land may be collectively owned, or held by a trust or hapū.

Rent to Buy

Rent-to-Buy is a pathway that gives your whānau time to build financial readiness while living in a home you intend to purchase. It works best as a stepping stone; a period of renting that leads to ownership when the time is right.
