Kaenga Hou is a kaupapa Māori charitable trust. We create home ownership pathways on Māori land, where conventional finance seldom ventures. We currently operate in Te Tairāwhiti, Te Tai Tokerau, and Hawke's Bay.
We are Māori-led.
Registered with Charities Services, we operate as a Registered Financial Service Provider and Certified Credit Provider under the Financial Markets Authority (FMA).
We are building a replicable model for Māori home ownership across the motu, one that is whānau-centred, evidence-based, and designed to outlast any single funding cycle.
Kaenga Hou is a demonstration that ownership on whenua Māori is possible and that the systems, finance, and support to make it happen can be built to last. For our tamariki, our rangatahi, and for generations to come.
Our Vision
Kia tupu, kia puāwai te mana motuhake o ngā whānau
Our Mission
Transforming lives through home ownership.
Our People
Kaenga Hou is guided by an experienced team committed to creating sustainable housing pathways for Māori whānau. With expertise spanning housing, finance, governance, community development, data sovereignty, and innovation, our shared vision is grounded in empowering whānau and delivering long-term positive outcomes in our communities.
Our name reflects the heart of our kaupapa.
Kaenga
is the Ngāti Porou term for home, residence, or place of living. It is attached to the sense of home and identity where ahi kaa live in order to keep the home fires burning.
Hou
represents new beginnings - a journey of revitalisation and enhanced well-being, blending life’s fresh opportunities with an enduring connection to whenua and whakapapa.
At Kaenga Hou, we strive to empower whānau to achieve home ownership and financial independence through progressive home ownership pathways. We use innovative finance mechanisms and tailored wraparound support throughout your journey to becoming home owners.
Our logo brings this vision to life:
The Porourangi poutama pattern, designed by Sir Apirana Ngata, symbolises intergenerational growth, advancement, and the continuity of whakapapa - reflecting our commitment to empowering whānau across generations.
The purple pays tribute to the legendary Lt. Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu and the C Company of the 28th Māori Battalion, honouring their enduring legacy and the Victoria Cross ribbon.
The surrounding triangles represent the essential pillars of affordability, accessibility, and healthy homes - foundations for a thriving future.
The central triangle places whānau at the heart of our kaupapa.
Kaenga Hou is a pathway to strength, stability, and thriving hāpori for whānau today and for generations to come.
